Setting up an Aquarium

A fascinating hobby that you might want to check out is keeping fish. Fish are colorful and beautiful additions to your home. Many people find caring for fish, and watching them extremely helpful in reducing stress and anxiety. When you decide that owning an aquarium might be the thing for you, you will want to look into setting up an aquarium

The first thing you should consider before you go out and buy all the equipment and supplies for your new aquarium is what type of fish you want to keep. Do some homework on the different types of fish and which ones can live together and which ones cannot. Decide whether you want freshwater fish or saltwater fish.

Once you've decided on the fish you should purchase all the necessary equipment. A tank that will accommodate the number of fish you plan on caring for. Ask a professional at the fish store to help you choose the size tank you will need. A filter and heater are essential items that you will have to purchase. Also, you should buy a light for the aquarium cover.

Once you have all your equipment, wash down the aquarium with freshwater and a sponge.

There are a variety of backgrounds available for your fish tank. Choose one that suits your style and taste. Get creative with it; it's a beautiful way to accent a room. Choose accessories that compliment your background. You are the interior designer of your fishes' home.

Next you should decide where in the room you plan to put the stand for your aquarium. Avoid direct sunlight. Sunlight will cause algae to grow more rapidly. Make sure the stand and the tank are level. Once all the decisions are made about placement, set up the filter, air pump and heater.

Now comes the fun part. Begin by placing the gravel in the tank. Wash it thoroughly before you put it in the tank. Try some plastic plants and decorations. Be certain they are weighted down with gravel or you will find your decorating efforts floating at the top of the tank. If you're really brave try some real plants and rocks.

Add the water and water treatment when the tank is full. Test the tank for a few days and make sure everything is running properly before you add the fish. Once you know that your tank is operating perfectly it's time to put in the fish.

The fish are in the tank and you are enjoying your new hobby. Make sure you check on the clarity of the water and keep an eye on the equipment. Everyday as you feed your fish, it is a good idea to do a little check on how everything in their environment is doing.

Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of an aquarium that you set up yourself.
