Caring for a Freshwater Aquarium

You have to have a love of fish to go through the work of setting up an aquarium. What is involved is giving the fish an environment that will provide your fish with good health and continued growth throughout their life. There are books and articles available to help you get through the job with ease. Or if you prefer, you can enlist the advice and help of someone with expert knowledge.

The first thing you will need to do is outfit your tank. Find the appropriate size tank to accommodate the number of fish that will be housed in it. The essential requirements to a well-equipped tank are a filter system, heater and a light source in the cover. Once you acquire all the equipment and fill it with water you have just begun on the road to preparing your tank for fish.

The balance in your tank is an important principle to keep in check. The number of fish in the tank will affect the clarity of the water. The fish will excrete waste material into the tank. When you are adding fish to the tank it is important to keep an eye on the clarity of the water. Pay particular attention to this, as it will tell you how many fish you are able to keep in your tank. In fact, it is a good idea to check the balance every time you feed the fish. Since this is done once a day you will be sure to check every day.

The water in a fresh water tank must be changed once a week. Not only will you change the water but also you will removed the dirt that has accumulated at the bottom of the tank. Avoid chlorinated water and chemically treated water, as it will damage the fish. When cleaning the tank make sure you unplug the power from the filter and heaters. This will help avoid breaking the glass due to temperature change.

Clean the glass at the same time you change the water. Fish don't like dirty glass in their aquarium. Some have even noted behavior changes in fish because of dirty glass. The water should not be too hot so you don't affect the good bacteria in the tank.

These are just a couple of noteworthy tips to help you keep your freshwater tank healthy and clean for your fish. You can add other enhancements to your fish's environment such as plants and objects for them to swim through to help keep them happy in their new home.
